Recognized as one of the Best 10 Towns for Families by Family Circle magazine, Cooper City has grown from 85 residents at its founding in 1959 to over 35,000 and counting. Cooper City is located 10 miles from Florida’s Atlantic Coast, which is far enough away to avoid crowds of tourists but close enough to make visiting the beach an easy thing. Residents choose Fort Lauderdale’s beautiful beaches that stretch to the north or Hollywood beaches beckoning to the south.
Outdoor Destinations
One of the more popular outdoor destinations is Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park, a calming, historic, undeveloped beachside escape located about 10 miles due east of Cooper City. This park offers quiet hiking, bicycling, swimming, fishing, and boating in a natural atmosphere and in contrast to nearby developed coastlines. For a more developed but still quiet park, drive the few minutes to Hollywood North Beach Park, with the Atlantic on the east side and the Intracoastal Waterway on the west. Visitors can enjoy boardwalks, an observation tower, and maintained picnic areas. Event facilities are available for rent.
Not in the mood for the beach? In Davie, just two and a half miles away, enjoy Tree Tops Park, an expansive park where choices of family recreation abound. There you can hike, bike, and exercise on outdoor fitness equipment or kayak and paddleboard on lush marshland lakes. Want to stay on dry land? Enjoy watching wildlife in stately old Florida oak trees from the 28-foot wooden observation tower. Expansive barbecue pavilions let you picnic in comfort even if an afternoon shower pops up.
For golf, enjoy Pembroke Lakes Golf Course an 18-hole public course with 6,815 yards of golf. Carts are included in the green’s fees, and warm up on the driving range, putting green, and more. It welcomes players of all ages and abilities.
Indoor Pursuits
When the weather isn’t cooperating, enjoy browsing among nostalgic memories at the Cooper City Antique Mall, or, for a more modern vibe, choose The Shops at Pembroke Gardens. There you’ll find dozens of major retail brands such as DSW, Lululemon, Sephora and more. When you need refreshments after shopping, you’ll find numerous options, including full-service restaurants, quick bites, specialty shops such as Haagen-Dazs, and happy hour options.
For the more artistic at heart, Nova Southeastern University Art Museum in Ft. Lauderdale offers 80,000 square feet of modern and contemporary art. The permanent collection holds more than 7,500 works, including the nation’s most extensive collection of late 19th and early 20th century works by the American realist William Glackens.
In the mood to get your blood pumping, try your hand at indoor skydiving at iFly. Add virtual reality to your experience and see what it’s like to fly over volcanoes in Hawaii or the Swiss Alps.
